Forex market analysts keep their eyes trained on a series of indicators to determine the long-term direction of currencies. These are known generally as macroeconomic indicators. As a whole, they describe the movements of money within economies that determine the perceived value of their currencies. Analysts can further compare the indicators of differing economies to determine whether their currencies are likely to strengthen or weaken against one another.  

News and information regarding a country's economy can have a direct impact on the direction that the country's currency is heading in much the same way that current events and financial news affect stock prices, hence the importance of economic factors. The following eight economic factors will directly affect a currency's movements in the Forex market.  

Factor 1 - Employment Data Non-farm payrolls is the name given to the data that pertains to the number of people who are employed within the US economy, and it is released the first Friday of every month by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Strong decreases in employment indicate a contracting economy, while strong increases are perceived indicators of a prosperous economy.  

Factor 2 - Interest Rates This is always a major focus in the forex market. Since the central banks mandate monetary policy and supply, they are the prime focus of investors and the various market participants.  

Factor 3 - Inflation This is the measure of increases or decreases in pricing levels over a period of time. Due to the immense number of goods and services available in a country, usually a grouping of these goods and services are used to measure changes in the pricing. Increases in pricing indicate an increase in the inflation rate which in turn can devalue that country's currency.  

Factor 4 - Gross Domestic Product This is the measurement for goods and services that were finished over a period of time. The GDP is broken down into 4 categories:  

1. business spending 
2. government spending 
3. private consumption 
4. total net exports  

Factor 5 - Retail Sales The measurement of sales recorded by retailers over a period of time is a reflection of either increased or decreased consumer spending, depending on whether sales are up or down for the comparative period a year ago. This indicator gives market participants an idea as to how strong or weak the economy is.  

Factor 6 - Durable Goods Goods that have a lifespan of three or more years are considered durable goods and they are measured in quantities that are ordered, shipped, or unfilled over a period of time. These are also an indicator of economic spending or the lack of it.  

Factor 7 - Trade and Capital Flows Currency values can be significantly impacted by monetary flows that result from certain interactions between countries. When imports exceed exports, there is a tendency for the currency value to decline. Increased investments in a country can lead to the opposite result. 

 Factor 8 - Macroeconomic and Geopolitical Events Elections, financial crises, monetary policy changes, and wars can influence the biggest changes in the Forex market. These events can either change and/or lead to reshaping of a country's economy. 

Moving Average 

A widely used indicator in technical analysis that helps smooth out price action by filtering out the “noise” from random price fluctuations. A moving average (MA) is a trend-following or lagging indicator because it is based on past prices. The two basic and commonly used MAs are the simple moving average (SMA), which is the simple average of a security over a defined number of time periods, and the exponential moving average (EMA), which gives bigger weight to more recent prices. The most common applications of MAs are to identify the trend direction and to determine support and resistance levels. While MAs are useful enough on their own, they also form the basis for other indicators such as the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD).. MA is a line formed by the average price of currency pairs. For intraday traders, MAs are often set for analysis at 5-minute, 10-minute, and 30-minute intervals. For longer-term traders, parameters such as 5-day, 13-day, and 55-day MAs are commonly used. 

Bollinger Bands

A Bollinger Band, developed by famous technical trader John Bollinger, is plotted two standard deviations away from a simple moving average. In this example of Bollinger Bands, the price of the stock is bracketed by an upper and lower band along with a 21-day simple moving average. Because standard deviation is a measure of volatility, when the markets become more volatile, the bands widen; during less volatile periods, the bands contract. Default setting (20,2). Bollinger Bands consist of upper, middle, and lower bands. Generally, candlesticks (K-lines) move between the upper and lower bands.
 

Moving Average Convergence / Divergence:

Moving average convergence divergence (MACD) is a trend-following momentum indicator that shows the relationship between two moving averages of prices. The MACD is calculated by subtracting the 26-day exponential moving average (EMA) from the 12-day EMA. A nine-day EMA of the MACD, called the 'signal line', is then plotted on top of the MACD, functioning as a trigger for buy and sell signals. MACD consists of the DIFF line, DEA line, and MACD line. It assesses the aggregation and separation between short-term (usually 12-day) and long-term (usually 26-day) moving averages to make judgments on buying and selling timing. It is commonly used to analyze changes in market trends. 

Trendline: 

Trendlines connect two or more highs (lows) to form straight lines, corresponding to uptrend lines (downtrend lines). These lines, when extended, serve as reference points for future resistance or support levels. When the asset price breaks through important long-term trendlines, it indicates that the trend is about to reverse. At this point, investors need to adjust their trading strategies, and it's important to distinguish between false breaks or instances where the trendline is too far away. 

Relative Strength Index:

The relative strength index (RSI) is a momentum indicator developed by noted technical analyst Welles Wilder, that compares the magnitude of recent gains and losses over a specified time period to measure speed and change of price movements of a security. It is primarily used to attempt to identify overbought or oversold conditions in the trading of an asset. 

Buy Stop: an order to buy a market once the price reaches a specific level, which is higher than the current price.

Sell Stop: an order to sell a market once the price reaches a specific level, which is lower than the current price.

Buy Limit: an order to buy a market once the price reaches a level that’s lower than the current price.

Sell Limit: an order to sell a market once the price reaches a level that’s higher than the current price.

In FX trading, there are several types of pending orders available that allow traders to plan entries and exits in advance based on specific price conditions. Here’s an overview of the main types:

1. Buy Limit Order

A Buy Limit order is set below the current market price. It is used when a trader believes the price will drop to a certain level before reversing and moving upward, allowing them to buy at a lower price.

2. Sell Limit Order

A Sell Limit order is placed above the current market price. This order is used when a trader expects the price to rise to a specific level before reversing downward, allowing them to sell at a higher price.

3. Buy Stop Order

A Buy Stop order is set above the current market price. Traders use it when they believe the price will continue rising after reaching a certain level. This order activates a buy position once the specified price is hit.

4. Sell Stop Order

A Sell Stop order is placed below the current market price. It is used when traders anticipate the price will continue falling after reaching a certain level, triggering a sell position at the specified price.

5. Stop-Limit Order

A Stop-Limit order combines aspects of stop and limit orders. Once a stop price is reached, the order becomes a limit order at a set price, offering more control over entry or exit but with the possibility of not filling if the price moves beyond the limit.

Because currencies are traded in pairs (e.g., EUR/USD), each trade represents the buying of one currency while simultaneously selling another.    - A **pip** is the smallest price movement in a currency pair, usually the fourth decimal place (e.g., 0.0001 for most currency pairs). For some pairs like USD/JPY, it’s the second decimal place.

   - The **pip value** represents the monetary worth of a one-pip move in a specific trade and depends on the position size (e.g., 1 lot, 0.1 lot) and the currency pair.
